LEGAL INFORMATION — NOT LEGAL ADVICE. No attorney-client relationship. Speak with a qualified lawyer about your situation.
At home, ask to see any warrant through the closed door. An ICE administrative warrant is different from a judge-signed judicial warrant. Do not consent to entry or a search; do not physically resist.
Ask to consult a lawyer. In civil immigration proceedings, the government generally does not provide a free lawyer. Ask for a legal-services list and an interpreter.
Ask a lawyer before signing documents you do not understand. Documents may affect removal, voluntary departure or the ability to seek relief.
Tell staff promptly about urgent medical needs and medications; request care and interpretation. Inform your lawyer or a trusted person and keep a dated record of requests.

Application depends on the facts and current law. Criminal-trial guarantees do not automatically apply to civil immigration proceedings. These amendments do not guarantee release, immigration bond or a government-paid immigration lawyer.

Plain-language explanations (not the constitutional text)
1
Protects religious exercise, speech, the press, peaceful assembly and petitions to government; prohibits laws establishing religion.
2
Protects the right to keep and bear arms. The text refers to a well-regulated militia.
3
Restricts housing soldiers in private homes: owner consent in peacetime; wartime rules must be set by law.
4
Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures. Warrants require probable cause, an oath or affirmation, and particular descriptions. Exceptions and remedies depend on law.
5
Addresses grand juries for serious federal crimes, with military exceptions; double jeopardy; compelled self-incrimination in criminal cases; due process; and compensation when private property is taken for public use.
6
In criminal prosecutions, protects speedy, public trials, an impartial jury, notice of charges, confrontation of witnesses, obtaining defense witnesses, and assistance of counsel.
7
Preserves jury trial in certain common-law civil suits exceeding twenty dollars and limits reexamination of jury findings. It is not a jury right in immigration removal proceedings.
8
Prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments. It does not promise bail in every case.
9
Listing some rights in the Constitution does not deny or diminish other rights retained by the people.
10
Powers not delegated to the federal government, and not prohibited to the states, are reserved to the states or the people.

The locator excludes children under 18. Records may be incomplete or delayed. Follow up with the field office and counsel.
When someone is detained
Practical starting points for families and advocates.
Before calling or visiting
- Confirm the current location; people can be transferred. Do not rely on a map pin to locate a specific person.
- Ask about legal calls, attorney visits, family visitation, interpretation, mail, identification requirements, medication and urgent medical requests.
- Keep a dated record of calls, transfers, requests and responses. Share urgent concerns with the person’s lawyer.
- Check official instructions before paying a vendor, sending money or travelling. Rules and approved services differ by facility.

District boundaries orient you to the court. They do not decide jurisdiction or entitlement to relief.
Start with the custody question
28 U.S.C. § 2241 is a potential vehicle to challenge unlawful custody. For a core present-physical-custody petition, the starting point is ordinarily the district of confinement and the immediate custodian. Immigration cases, transfers, respondents and jurisdictional limits require case-specific analysis.
A detention challenge is different from seeking review of a final removal order. Filing a petition does not automatically stay removal or require release.
National § 2241 petition form (AO 242) ↗Check the district’s actual procedures
Use the district panel for official court, local rules, forms and filing resources. Confirm attorney admission, fee or in-forma-pauperis application, service, redaction, emergency procedures and assigned-judge orders.
Do not import state-prisoner § 2254 rules or federal-sentence § 2255 rules wholesale into an immigration § 2241 case. Some habeas rules apply only when the court directs.
What “up to date” means here
Research edition: October 26, 2026. Every district has its own source-check status. A reachable rules link is not proof of a complete substantive local-rule, standing-order, judge-practice or case-law audit.
Where rules could not be checked today, the panel says so. Review current court orders, appellate stays and individual dockets before relying on any deadline or remedy. This resource is legal information, not representation.

U.S. citizens documented by ProPublica
January 2025–September 2026. Published October 6, 2026. Includes immigration agents across agencies—not an ICE-only count.
Counts people prevented from leaving, including brief holds, handcuffing or detention at gunpoint. An investigative tally, not a complete official census; a record of detention is not itself a finding of illegality.
ProPublica · cases & methodology ↗Potential U.S. citizens detained by ICE
Fiscal year 2015–March 2020. GAO’s July 20, 2021 report analyzed available ICE data; “potential U.S. citizens” is the report’s category, not a count of conclusively verified citizens.
GAO also reported 674 arrests and 70 removals in that period. These categories can overlap. Its data-tracking recommendation was marked implemented following ICE changes in February 2025.

Facilities
The inventory uses source-reported facility records. Historical or recently reported use does not establish that a facility is operating or accepting people today. Unverifiable locations remain in the directory without fabricated map coordinates.

Documented deaths
UCLA Law’s Behind Bars Data Project compiled and validated these records against ICE reports, notices, historical logs and other sources. Individual ICE links are retained when available. This map has not independently adjudicated every report.
A rust pin shows a last-associated detention facility, not necessarily the place of death. Counts are not mortality rates, safety ratings, or findings of fault. “No linked record” never means “no deaths.”

Geography, privacy and corrections
District outlines use an ArcGIS layer attributed to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Courts (source geometry last edited October 7, 2024). Spatial joins are approximate, especially near boundaries. Use the court’s official jurisdiction information to confirm.
The map library and boundaries are served locally. No external basemap tiles, geolocation request, analytics or personal-identifier lookup is used by this map. External links have their own privacy policies.
For corrections, use Legal Renaissance’s existing contact channels and include the facility name, source URL and date. Do not send private case information.
